What To Know About HVAC Warranties and Repairs

Warranties for your HVAC system are different than warranties for appliances or cars. It is important to get to know what your warranty covers in case you do need an HVAC repair.

Parts Warranty

Your HVAC system is often covered by a longer parts warranty. In the past, the parts warranty only lasted for three to five years. Today, warranties that last past ten years are common. Parts warranties are important. You will want to make sure that the parts of your HVAC system have replacements as soon as possible and at a lower cost.

Warranty Exclusions

There are several exclusions that you will want to know about. These include:

Labor. Labor is rarely covered under the manufacturer warranty. The labor will be a large part of the repair price. If you want to have your labor costs covered, you may have to buy a separate labor warranty. Speak with your installer or dealer about getting labor covered.

Certain parts. You would expect that your warranty covers all parts. But, there may be certain exclusions. This can include sheet metal parts or parts that are only covered for a specific period of time. You will want to look at things to see if it will cover them. This includes things like the heat exchanger, compressor, and maintenance items.

Circumstances. There will be exclusions for warranties for certain things. This includes acts of god, electrical surges, physical destruction, storms, and fire damage. Your home's insurance policy will cover these issues.

Changes in ownership. When you buy a new home or sell it with an existing HVAC system, the warranty period may become canceled or reduced.

Getting Repairs Under Warranty

If you are in need of repairs and have determined that it falls under the warranty, you will want to do the following:

Inspect the problem. You will want to make sure that you look to ensure that nothing is wrong on your end. For example, make sure that the power is on, and the breaker is not tripped. You will also want to check your thermostat. This could save you from having to call out a technician.

Locate an HVAC company. You will want to find an HVAC professional that is well experienced in the repairs you need. Read reviews online and make sure that they will honor your warranty.

Make an appointment. Once you have found the right company, give them a call to set up an appointment. The longer that you wait to get the repairs completed, the larger the issue may be. Then, you run the chance of your warranty expiring.
